Background of the Study

Pediatric dehydration is a common condition that occurs when a child loses more fluids than they take in, resulting in a fluid imbalance that can impair normal bodily functions (Ikeji et al., 2024). Dehydration can be caused by various factors, including diarrhea, vomiting, fever, or inadequate fluid intake. In severe cases, dehydration can lead to serious complications, including organ failure or death. Early detection and prompt treatment are essential for preventing these adverse outcomes. Rehydration therapy, which involves the administration of fluids to restore normal hydration levels, is the cornerstone of managing dehydration in children (Uzochukwu et al., 2023).

Nurses play an important role in the management of pediatric dehydration, as they are involved in the early recognition of symptoms, the administration of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or intravenous fluids, and monitoring patients' progress. However, studies have shown that nurses’ knowledge and response to pediatric dehydration and rehydration therapy can vary widely (Okafor et al., 2023). This study aims to examine nurses' knowledge and responses to pediatric dehydration and rehydration therapy at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

Statement of the Problem

Pediatric dehydration is a serious health issue that requires timely intervention. However, there are concerns that nurses may not always have the necessary knowledge or skills to effectively manage dehydration in children. At Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, inadequate knowledge of rehydration therapy and delayed interventions could contribute to poor patient outcomes. This study will assess the extent of nurses' knowledge regarding pediatric dehydration and their response to rehydration therapy.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of nurses regarding pediatric dehydration and rehydration therapy at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

  2. To evaluate the responses of nurses in managing pediatric dehydration through rehydration therapy.

  3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in providing appropriate rehydration therapy to dehydrated pediatric patients.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses regarding pediatric dehydration and rehydration therapy at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri?

  2. How do nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, respond to pediatric dehydration and rehydration therapy?

  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing pediatric dehydration and administering rehydration therapy?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses with higher knowledge of pediatric dehydration are more likely to respond effectively to rehydration therapy.

  2. There is a significant relationship between the availability of rehydration resources and the effectiveness of nurses' response to dehydration.

  3. Nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, face significant barriers in providing appropriate rehydration therapy to pediatric patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on nurses working in pediatric care units at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, and will assess their knowledge, practices, and challenges in managing dehydration and rehydration therapy in children. A limitation of the study is that it may not account for variations in clinical practices between different pediatric care units.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pediatric Dehydration: A condition in which a child loses more fluids than they take in, resulting in a disruption in the balance of water and electrolytes in the body.

  • Rehydration Therapy: The process of restoring lost fluids in dehydrated patients, typically through oral rehydration solutions or intravenous fluids.

  • Nurses' Knowledge: The understanding that nurses have regarding the signs, causes, and management of pediatric dehydration, including rehydration therapies.
